I must admit to being just a little chuffed!

With thanks to Coordinator ‘Ted’, the ADL2016 Committee, and the judges, who described ‘Farewell’ as ‘a haunting, heartbreaking story’, and ‘Speaking in Tongues’ as a poem with ‘an unmistakable voice and beautiful use of language’.

These two pieces are extracted from the novel I am currently writing and are unashamedly based on my mother’s early memories and experiences of the war.

These are the two pieces I read to my mother just before she died. We both cried.

Vale Elza! You gave me your life. I felt the burden of it. And now I thank you with my tears and my writing.
