ST ANNE’S KEW, 8 APRIL 2014

20140505-123318.jpg

I thought of something
this morning, the thought rose
with the sun and faded

the stones spoke
and the sky
and the streets

the young man’s face rose from behind the gravestone
not a ghost, an artisan
employed to re-chisel the epitaphs graved here

~

the chisel of the mason
carves afresh the old inscriptions
as if posterity might want to know
who lies here
as if all who lie here are not dead
the dead long gone returned to earth
the stones erased, as they should be
by time and weather—
rain, sun, snow, wind
erasing the letters that gave voice
to the stone
