the streets weep
stones worn smooth by boots slip

the stones speak of blood and piss
the smell of piss
the smell of life

we have forgotten
we have forgotten how to live

the race begins and ends here
in these streets
between the lines waiting to enter
and the feet walking past

to the next bar
to the next bar

the tongue curls on vino tinto
the colour of rubies
the taste they call pepper
that is not pepper
the taste of earth
the taste of blood
and stone
the stone of the streets
and the smell of the earth
that lies beneath the stones
the water that seeps between the stones
the weed that grows
in the poor earth
in the cracks in the stones
the small yellow flower
that is the yellow flower of the weed
the small sun
that shines between the stones
the small sun
that warms the stones
stones as worn as centuries
stones that no longer speak
silenced by the noise of the new century
we live
